Brewer's Notes: This beer was made in conjunction with our friends The Brat’ya Baline – or Berlin Brothers, our house musicians and the wonderful people behind our annual Christmas Concert.
The beer was designed in a meeting with the band in which we talked a lot about flavors. We settled on a Russian Imperial Stout because of the band’s namesake: Irving Berlin, whose name at birth was Israel Baline. (Brat’ya is the Russian word for brother). On top of that, we wanted something that invoked “winter warmer” or “Christmas” without it seeming like a specifically CHRISTMAS beer. We agreed that the characteristics of a good spiced rum seemed to make us think of cold weather and winter just perfectly. So we made an extract reduction using black rum, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, cranberries, and figs and used that as a flavor additive for the beer.
Overall, it’s a rich, delicious, yet drinkable dark beer that evokes all of the feeling of a snowy winter night.
